If you want to install some form of renewable energy source but can't afford it, try applying for a government grant.

In the UK the Low Carbon Buildings Programme is a grant funded by the Department of Trade and Industry that householders, community groups, and public, not-for-profit and private organisations can all apply.

The amount you could be eligible for depends on the cost and form of the technology, but there are grants for solar hot water, solar electricity, wind turbines, small hydro and ground source heat pumps and bioenergy heating.
